TMJ/TMD FAQ
What exactly is the temporomandibular joint?
Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short, is the hinge just in front of your ear that connects your jaw to your skull. There is one on each side of your jaw. This joint is what allows your jaw to move forward, backward, and side-to-side.
What causes TMD?
The main cause of TMD is when there is excessive strain on your temporomandibular joint. Some of the known ways this can occur include jaw injuries, grinding or clenching your teeth, arthritis, genetics, and a misaligned bite.
How do you diagnose TMD?
Dr. Elgohary will review your medical history, go over your symptoms, and perform a physical exam. During this exam, he will look to see if there are any concerns in your teeth, check your bite, and examine your jaw movement. We may also take X-rays or call for additional tests.
Does TMJ treatment require surgery?
Not all TMD cases require surgery. In fact, most do not! There are a variety of more conservative therapies available to try first, from simple lifestyle changes to custom oral appliances. We’ll need to go over your unique case to decide which treatment option will be most effective for you.
